Giving Intention 2016-2017 News

The Power of Coming Home

bob hart for giving intentionby Bob Hart

Have you had this experience: You come to Sunday Service, hear the message, and walk out of the Sanctuary wondering how Dr. Edward knew that was exactly the message you needed to hear? When I first arrived here 14 years ago, that was one of the experiences I shared with my friends and they would invariably reply, “Me too!” It was uncanny, as if Edward had microphones planted in our living rooms, listening in to see what messages we needed that week.

Now, having been here awhile, I’ve noticed another common experience folks have as a result of the Center being in their lives. For me it goes something like this: I was searching for a spiritual community, I came to my first service, sat alone in the middle of the Sanctuary with tears of joy, and left knowing I had found my Spiritual Home. This was followed by years of glorious experiences filled with constant gratitude for being a part of this wonderful community.
Sound familiar? How about this from practitioner Suzanne Sackett. I asked Suzanne what it meant to her to be a part of the Center. She responded that she came to the Center “seeking something real and true and heart-opening. I was hungry and aching to live in a new way, desiring the blessings of an everyday spirituality.” Yet, on her first visit, Suzanne says she sat in the back, tears streaming down her cheeks, not standing to be known as a newcomer, and leaving without speaking to a soul. Sound familiar?

Suzanne goes on to say, “I returned again and again. Stepping up, pushing beyond my resistance, learning to surrender to that Something Calling Me.” She says she developed a daily spiritual practice, attended classes and workshops, found a prayer partner, met with a Prayer Practitioner, volunteered, and learned to give lovingly of her time and treasure. “And,” she says, “I received so much more than I gave! Members and friends of this sacred community have held me, literally and figuratively, both in times of sorrow and joy, with more love than I imagined or knew was possible.”

I don't know about you, but hearing Suzanne's comments reminded me of why this community, which is really all of us, is such an important part of my life.
