Why I love the One Heart Choir

Members of the One Heart Choir express their gratitude for being part of the music ministry at the center and tell the story of why they love to sing. Look for a different story every few weeks and come see us sing Sunday, October 17 at all three services. Watch for news about our upcoming concert Saturday October 23 - "From the Heart-a Showcase of Choir Talent".

Why I Love to Sing in The One Heart Choir– Jeff Wong - Baritone/Bass

What a wonderful opportunity to share my story with the One Heart Choir and to affirm how our Choir is aligned with the community we serve.

So to start, my wife Edie had dragged me, kicking and screaming, to the Church of Religious Science, the name of our center at that time, sometime in 2001. After my first attendance (by the way I didn't stand up), it didn't take long for us to become a "regular" at the 8 am service. By the spring of 2003, we felt so connected to the community and its' philosophy that we became Members. In June 2003, there was an item in the Sunday announcement that Claire was holding a workshop for "Closet Singers". Though I'm not a closet singer, I am claustrophobic. I signed up.

At that workshop, I had such a powerful connection to spirit I knew I wanted to sing in the Choir.  I was relieved when I learned that the only requirement for Choir at the time was that you be a member, contributed seva (selfless service), OR have completed the "Foundations" class. "I qualify, I'm a member and I do seva,” I said to myself.  With the fact that I had no musical training, couldn't read music and didn't play a musical instrument I joined the One Heart Choir in September 2003.

There are two things I remember about my first night in Choir. First, I sat by Steve Anderson, Ben Stanley and Erick Larson, who are tenors. We started practice with the song Someone Needs A Prayer Today. It didn't take long for our director Claire to stop practice and ask me to sit by Al, BC, Manual, Bill and Harvey, who are baritones. When I got home, Edie asked how things went. I replied, "I got de-noted". The second thing I re-member about my first night is that Claire kept on calling me Roger. Funny thing is Joyce Duffala would call me Roger when she saw me at the Center. Glad to report both now call me Jeff.

In closing, there were maybe 30 to 40 Choir members when I started. We have now evolved into a loving 80 + member community. Over the past 8 years, I have come to realize we are a ministry here at the Center for Spiritual Living. We are given the opportunity to entertain, enlighten, inspire and raise the level of conscious-ness in our community. What a privilege that is! I am so blessed and so grateful. Jeff Wong

P.S. Watch for Claire's upcoming workshop "Sing Your Heart Open", Saturday November 6, 1-5 PM!

Everything You Need to Know About Choir Fall 2010

Fall 2010

Purpose statement:
We, the members of the ONE HEART CHOIR, a ministry of the Center for Spiritual Living, Santa Rosa, serve our community by bringing Love, Joy and Harmony to the celebration through music for the purpose of raising consciousness.

The ONE HEART CHOIR is a singing community whose vocal sound is woven together by something more than the strength of individual talent. Members are encouraged to develop personal creativity and then blend this into the greater group experience of unity and service through music. The music of the ONE HEART CHOIR expresses the love, trust and authenticity that is developed in this process.

Membership Service:
It takes a village . . . members share their musical skills and also commit to selfless service (seva) directly associated with choir. Choir members are required to have completed or to be enrolled in either the Beyond Limits class or the Foundations class. Ask about choir discount price. It is strongly recommended that all prospective members attend the selfless service (seva) workshop and/or attend the Center Membership classes. Call Georgett at 546-4543 x110 for the date of these free classes.

Accountability / Absence Policy:
Please check in with Claire Victor, Choir Director, about all absences: rehearsals, performances or a request for an extended time away. Also, note the dates of any planned absences on the attendance sheet. In the event of an unplanned absence, call or email Claire AND your designated section leader before the start of a rehearsal if possible. Everyone is held responsible for the material covered during each rehearsal. Make sure you arrange to have a choir “buddy” take notes and/or record the session you miss. Frequent, unreported absences may result in dismissal.

Music Preparation:
Sheet Music: As a new member, you’ll be invited to join The ONE HEART CHOIR yahoo group. Sheet music is stored on this site under FILES > Fall 2010 Music:  PDF files (charts, sheet music, lyrics). The files will either be just lyrics, music with parts or just the melody line. You are responsible for printing your music.

Attend all rehearsals with sheet music, audio recorders and other support tools.

Computers are an ESSENTIAL part of choir. YOU NEED COMPUTER ACCESS TO JOIN CHOIR.  If you need computer training on how to use your computer to support your choir experience, please let us know as soon as possible so we can arrange that.

Homework:
Each member is required to devote individual time to learning his/her part between scheduled group rehearsals.  If any questions or concerns come up as you rehearse independently, contact a “buddy” or section leader(s).  Come to sectional prepared with your well-rehearsed part and clarifying questions. We are “off book” two weeks prior to a performance date. All music is to be memorized at that point.

Choir Email:
Choir email is essential. Check it weekly before rehearsal for announcements. Choir email is for currently enrolled choir members and staff only. Email assists with questions pertaining to choir music preparation, prayer requests and demonstrations. We also use it for community building and keeping each other informed of music-related announcements and personal inquiry. Please, NO chain letters or political mail. If your email is not directly related to choir music like a prayer request or a request for house rental leads make sure you indicate this in the subject line with the word, “(optional)”. Dress Code:
We wear a certain style or color(s) for performances. You will be expected to either borrow or purchase some items if you do not already own them. We try to give 3 weeks advance notice of color schemes so you can plan your outfit.

Treatment and Prayer:
Choir practitioners are available to you for prayer requests. We open each sectional with prayer. This is a great opportunity to practice praying out loud. You also might consider having a choir prayer partner.

Vocal coaching:
Periodically, Claire and other members will offer “sectional classes” and/or other music skill development opportunities. They are designed to work group qualities including blending and tone. In addition you may want to consider private voice lessons as well as spiritual counseling for those beliefs that hold you back from expressing your full voice. Both are available at a discount to choir members.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
